QuarkXpress
It costs too much, we had to wait too long and it doesn't do enough! This is an easy set of conclusions to jump to if you're mainly interested in print publishing and you've just taken a cursory glance at XPress 5's new feature-set. Yes, you do now get a in-built Table Editor, and it's executed very well indeed. It's easy and obvious to use, and it's so well integrated with the other box/content tools you'd think it had been there all the time.

Macromedia FreeHand
FreeHand has long been the choice of the professional designer and illustrator, mainly due to its ease of use and comprehensive vector toolset. Its only serious competition comes in the form of Adobe Illustrator, currently residing on version 9. Other vector applications that present a challenge to FreeHand's crown include CorelDRAW 10 and Expression (although slightly different due to its natural media approach), but neither seems to have the kudos or high-end appeal of Macromedia's package.

Adobe Illustrator
For many years, Adobe Illustrator has set the standard for drawing programs in the print production environment, and with good reason. This professional graphics program offers powerful vector drawing tools, clean PostScript output, and tight integration with Adobe Photoshop. Version 10.0 also offers more powerful new drawing and automation tools, such as editable warping effects and symbols (adaptable masters of objects or images). Macromedia FreeHand still remains a better choice if you are looking for synergy with Flash, the leading authoring program for Web animation. And if you're new to illustration tools, check out CorelDraw instead. But for an all-around drawing program that's suitable for print and Web output, nothing beats Illustrator.

Jasc Paint Shop Pro
You just gotta love software that plays David to Adobe Photoshop's Goliath, and Jasc Software's Paint Shop Pro does just that. In fact, for about $500 less, you get a program that's almost as good as Photoshop. For example, Paint Shop Pro's vector drawing tools are so tightly integrated into the program--making them much easier to learn and use--that they beat Photoshop's hands down. This program is feature-packed and robust enough for professional-caliber image editing yet easy enough for artists of all skill levels. Read this review.

Adobe Premiere
Lending even more appeal to its already strong nonlinear video-editing product, Adobe has endowed Premiere 6.5 with real-time previewing, a DVD-authoring tool, new audio plug-ins, and a titling feature that comes with 90 PostScript fonts. Unfortunately, the Mac version doesn't fare as well as the PC one since it lacks both real-time audio plug- ins and DVD authoring.

Roxio VideoWave
This incarnation of VideoWave is the latest in a noble line of desktop video editing software. Put simply, this software enables you to capture, edit and compile various different video and audio sources into a complete production, which you might then burn onto a video CD.This new version of VideoWave fully supports DV editing, and will work with any OHCI-compliant DV camera (if they work with FireWire, they will work with VideoWave).
